Here’s a list of my favorite patron saints of late stage capitalism:
1.) Elizabeth Holmes
By far one of my favorite girl bosses, Elizabeth Holmes quickly found her way into my heart the second I heard about her business, Theranos. As a scientist, I’m obsessed with Theranos and everyone who praised it and invested in it: Joe Biden, Betsy DeVos, Rupert Murdoch, Henry Kissinger, Jim Mattis. You only need a basic understanding of science to realize how flawed the blood testing machine, The Edison was. Elizabeth Holmes has a cult of personality. She lowered her voice, wore the same black turtleneck and black pants every day, and manipulated her way into cold hard capital from dozens of rich investors. She did what every man does in the tech world, but was crucified for it because she’s a woman.
2.) Anna Delvey
We stan a Russian queen tricking rich celebs into giving her money and for tricking hotels into letting her stay for free. She lied to her friends, crafted an entirely new persona, and lived out a fast-paced socialite life all while spending zero of her own money. Anna Delvey is a modern self-serving Robin Hood. She stole from the rich (her friends) and gave to the poor (herself). Can’t wait to watch the new doc on her!
3.) Heather Morgan
I have had to learn more about Bitcoin and the Blockchain in order to follow Heather Morgan’s story more closely. I will never forgive her for this. Watching her videos and looking at the pictures she posted online, I couldn’t help but immediately think “WASP”. She’s a hyper-capitalist who penned the infamous article “What Living in Post-Revolutionary Egypt Taught Me About Entrepreneurship.” Like everyone on this list, she didn’t come from money and has a “you gotta hustle” type of personality that I relate to. Out of everyone on the list, she never tricked anyone and seemed to be a genuinely good person. She stole fake money from fake accounts, who cares?
4.) Chechen brides who conned ISIS
They wanted money and they got it. Three Chechen women hit up ISIS members on social media saying they would marry them but needed money first. The desperate men quickly transferred thousands of rubbles without hesitation only for the women to block them on social media immediately after the wire transfer went through. These men should be criticized for not having basic digital literacy and these women should be praised for teaching it to them. I believe women and I believe women have a right to change their mind about marriage. They should be celebrated for getting cold feet.
5.) Kari Ferrell
I think it’s important to realize that the girlboss transcends racial boundaries. Kari Ferrell was the Brooklyn version of Anna Delvey who would invade rich kid inner circles at parties, lie about having cancer and a myriad of other problems, then take their money and run. Colloquially known as the “Hipster Grifter” she would hook up with trust fund babies in Williamsburg and swindle them for cash. I say good for her.
This is amazing
