With references to leather culture, horror, and La Cicciolina, Patriarchy captures the energy of the big titty goth girlfriend meme.
Actually Huizenga fronts the band, a slight shift from her eponymous solo career which produced amazing original work as well as covers of Bruce Springsteen and Baby Love.
I first fell under the spell of Patriarchy by doing a deep dive into Geneva Jacuzzi. After exploring a bit I saw she was featured on the remix track “I Don’t Want To Die” and was spellbound. I found myself listening through all of Patriarchy’s songs for hours. So far, there are two albums released with a third slated for later in 2022- Asking For It (2019) and Reverse Circumcision (2021), an album of remixes featuring Drab Majesty, ADULT, and my personal favorite remix by Sacred Skin.
One of my favorite aspects of a musician is the ability to be combine audio and visual seamlessly. Each song can stand alone but is amplified by the short film storyline of their accompanying videos. This makes sense because Actually Huizenga is an actual filmmaker.
Patriarchy is coming to Saint Vitus in Greenpoint on Friday April 22nd for a show with Pixel Grip, 80s Baby, and Mayland which is sure to blend the aesthetics of sex, darkness, and goth into one fucking awesome show. If you want a taste of it, check out Bottom of the Pops, a quarantine era performance show of some of the remixes on Reverse Circumcision.
